Vietnam Airlines Finalizes Order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft
Boeing and Vietnam Airlines have announced that the Vietnamese flag carrier has finalised its first Boeing single-aisle aircraft order, confirming the purchase of 50 737 MAX aircraft. The order comprises the 737-8 variant and supports Vietnam Airlines’ plans to expand its domestic and regional network as air travel demand grows across Southeast Asia.
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, said the airline is focused on strengthening its overall capabilities through fleet renewal, financial stability, and talent development to support long-term growth objectives.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., attended by Vietnam and U.S. government officials, along with Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and Dang Ngoc Hoa. The event marked the disclosure of an unidentified order and reinforced Vietnam Airlines’ ongoing partnership with Boeing in Vietnam’s civil aviation sector.
According to Vietnam Airlines, the addition of 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft is an important step towards building a more fuel-efficient fleet, improving operational performance, and aligning service standards with international benchmarks. The agreement also strengthens the long-standing cooperation between the airline and Boeing, supporting Vietnam Airlines’ goal of expanding its international presence by 2030.
Vietnam Airlines plans to deploy the 737-8 to increase capacity and reliability as Vietnam’s air passenger traffic is projected to grow significantly over the next decade. The aircraft can accommodate up to 200 passengers, depending on configuration, and offers a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km), making it suitable for short- and medium-haul operations.
Stephanie Pope stated that Boeing will continue to support Vietnam Airlines as it combines the 737 MAX with its existing 787 Dreamliner fleet to expand regional connectivity across Asia.

Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on regional and long-haul routes, including services between Vietnam and Europe. The combination of the 737 MAX and 787 aircraft is expected to deliver fuel-efficiency improvements of approximately 20–25% compared with the aircraft they replace, reducing operating costs and enabling network expansion.
Beyond aircraft deliveries, Boeing remains active in Vietnam through its involvement in the commercial aviation sector, supply chain development, technical training initiatives, and university partnerships, with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
