Tourism Authority of Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted the “2025 Amazing Thailand Public Square Dance Competition” on September 12 at the Aksra Theatre in King Power. This event celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China. Its purpose was to promote cultural exchange and enhance awareness of Thailand’s tourism among China’s public square dance community.

The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Yang Xiao Long, Counsellor (Cultural Section) of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Thailand, and Mr. Chuwit Sirivajjakul, TAT Executive Director for East Asia Region.

The competition involved more than 300 participants from Kunming. Teams performed three-to-five-minute routines under the theme of the 50th anniversary of Thai–Chinese diplomatic ties. There was no limit on team size. Prizes included trophies and souvenirs for the top three teams, with additional recognition for best costume. All participants received certificates from TAT.

The judging panel included representatives from TAT and the private sector (Calypso). Performances were assessed on creativity, choreography, synchronicity, expression, stage presence, costume, and overall presentation.

In 2024, China’s population aged 50 and older reached approximately 290 million, with more than 120 million individuals regularly participating in public square dancing. This activity, popular among women aged 50 to 70, is recognized as a public sport under China’s 2023 national sports plan. Additionally, square dancing serves as a cultural connection, fostering friendship and understanding between China and Thailand.
