Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema to Reopen as Brand Flagship in Brazil by 2026
Sofitel has announced the transformation of Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema, which is set to reopen at the end of 2026 as the brand’s flagship property in Brazil. Located along Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, the renovated hotel will feature 172 rooms and suites and introduce a refreshed design concept that combines Sofitel’s French hospitality heritage with local Brazilian influences.

According to Maud Bailly, CEO of Sofitel Legend, Sofitel, MGallery & Emblems, the project reflects the brand’s continued presence in Brazil and its focus on destinations with strong cultural identity. The redevelopment is being carried out under new ownership and includes architectural and design updates aimed at reshaping the guest experience while maintaining the property’s connection to its surroundings.
Design and Guest Experience Inspired by Rio and French Hospitality

The redesign has been led by Brazilian architect Patricia Anastassiadis. The project introduces a contemporary design approach that emphasizes comfort, natural materials, and a visual connection with the beachfront setting.
The hotel’s location allows views of Ipanema Beach and the Dois Irmãos hills, while interior spaces incorporate textures and tones inspired by the sand, sea, and skyline of Rio. The building will also include glass façades across the first three floors and dual entrances on Avenida Vieira Souto and Rua Maria Quitéria, strengthening its integration with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Interior spaces will highlight Brazilian design and craftsmanship, including furniture and works by figures such as Oscar Niemeyer, Sergio Rodrigues, Zanini de Zanine and Hugo França, along with art and design elements from contemporary Brazilian creators.
Facilities, Dining, and Event Spaces

The transformed hotel will include a range of guest facilities. These will include a spa focused on wellness, a fitness centre, and a rooftop infinity pool with a solarium and bar overlooking the city and coastline.
On the 21st floor, the property will feature Club Millésime, Sofitel’s executive lounge offering dedicated services and private access for eligible guests. The third floor will house meeting and event spaces designed under the Meeting Residence concept, which focuses on smaller and more flexible gathering environments.
Dining will play a key role in the hotel’s offering. A signature restaurant located on the 22nd floor, led by a Michelin-starred chef, will present a menu alongside views of the coastline. Additional venues will include a rooftop bar, an all-day dining restaurant, and a beachfront restaurant on the ground floor. A Beach Club will extend the hotel’s food and beverage offering and connect guests with the Ipanema beachfront lifestyle.
A New Chapter for Sofitel in Rio de Janeiro

The redevelopment is part of Accor’s strategy to expand its luxury portfolio in Rio de Janeiro. According to Netto Moreira, General Manager of Accor’s luxury segment in Rio, the transformation aims to meet the changing expectations of travellers while preserving the city’s cultural identity.
Once completed, Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema is expected to serve as a hospitality venue for visitors and residents, combining French hospitality traditions with Rio de Janeiro’s cultural character.
