NH Collection Maldives Reethi Debuts Underwater-Aged Rum

NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort has introduced an underwater-aged rum initiative in partnership with Planteray Rum, marking what is described as the first certified underwater ageing of rum in glass bottles conducted by a resort.

The project explores alternative maturation techniques by placing sealed bottles of rum beneath the ocean’s surface, allowing natural marine conditions to influence the ageing process. The initial batch was submerged for approximately 12 months during the resort’s renovation period.

Underwater ageing process

The bottles were stored at a depth of around 10 metres in specially designed metal cages. The site, located within the Baa Atoll, was selected for its stable conditions, including minimal current disruption, limited sunlight exposure and consistent water temperature.

According to the project team, environmental factors such as hydrostatic pressure, gentle water movement and temperature stability contributed to the maturation process. Periodic checks were conducted to ensure the integrity of the storage system.

Product development and evaluation

Following retrieval ahead of the resort’s reopening in December 2025, the aged rum was assessed by blending specialists. Observations indicated differences in texture and flavour profile compared to traditionally aged variants, reflecting the influence of the underwater environment.

The initiative is positioned as an experimental extension of traditional ageing methods, combining established practices with environmental variables unique to marine settings.

Guest experience and future plans

The underwater-aged rum is expected to be incorporated into the resort’s food and beverage programme, including offerings at its mixology venues. Guests will be able to sample the product in both standalone tastings and curated cocktails.

Building on the initial results, additional batches are currently undergoing similar ageing processes. The programme is expected to continue as part of the resort’s broader culinary and experiential offerings.

“Underwater, time and conditions interact differently with the liquid. After a year beneath the sea, the rum has developed enhanced roundness, smoothness and complexity,” said Fannie Thibaud, Deputy Master Blender at Planteray Rum.
