Lufthansa Marks 100 Years with Hangar One Opening

Lufthansa Anniversary Event Opens Hangar One in Frankfurt

Lufthansa Group marked 100 years since the founding of its predecessor airline with a ceremony at Frankfurt Airport, where it also opened Hangar One, a new conference and visitor centre.

The event included a keynote address by Friedrich Merz, as well as remarks from Carsten Spohr and Karl-Ludwig Kley. The ceremony reflected on the company’s development over the past century and its role in aviation.

Carsten Spohr noted that the group has grown into an international organization with around 110,000 employees across multiple airlines and aviation businesses. He said the company continues to focus on connecting people, cultures and economies, while working towards more sustainable operations.

Friedrich Merz highlighted Lufthansa’s role in Germany’s economic and transport landscape, noting its contribution to connectivity and employment. He acknowledged the workforce as a key factor in the company’s continued operations.

Karl-Ludwig Kley said the group is focusing on areas such as innovation, digitalization and international expansion as part of its future direction, alongside developments in aviation technology.

The event also recognised employees across the organization, with participation from staff representing different roles, including apprentices, operational teams and administrative functions. Guests included representatives from government and industry.

Hangar One has been developed as a space for collaboration, events and public engagement. It will host exhibitions on the company’s history and aviation developments, with selected areas open to visitors. Among the exhibits are restored aircraft, including the Junkers Ju 52 and the Lockheed Super Star.

Today, a significant share of Lufthansa Group’s workforce is based in Germany, with a large concentration in Frankfurt. The new facility is intended to support internal collaboration while also offering visitors an opportunity to engage with aviation history and the company’s ongoing activities.
