Lufthansa Group Expands Climate Protection Projects

Lufthansa Group Increases Focus on CO₂ Reduction Solutions

Lufthansa Group has updated its climate protection project portfolio, increasing its focus on technology-based CO₂ reduction and removal solutions as part of its sustainability strategy.

The airline group’s revised portfolio now includes 14 certified climate protection projects across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and other international markets.

According to Lufthansa Group, the share of projects focused on long-term CO₂ removal has increased to around 20% of the portfolio. These projects include both nature-based and technology-driven approaches to carbon removal and storage.

Passengers travelling with Lufthansa Group airlines can contribute to climate protection initiatives through sustainable travel options and support for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

In 2025, passengers contributed to climate protection projects that covered more than 710,000 metric tonnes of CO₂, an increase of around 20% compared with the previous year.

Nina Sproedt, Head of Sustainability at Lufthansa Group, said the airline is increasing its focus on long-term carbon sequestration technologies while continuing to support aviation decarbonisation efforts.

The climate protection portfolio includes “avoidance” projects, which reduce emissions outside the aviation industry, and “removal” projects, which remove CO₂ directly from the atmosphere.

The airline group is also expanding its involvement in Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) technologies through partnerships with companies such as Climeworks, Airbus, and Deep Sky.

The airline said the projects in its portfolio are certified under recognized climate protection standards, including the Gold Standard.
