Heathrow Airport Reports H1 2026 Results with Growth in Passenger Traffic

Heathrow Airport welcomed a record 40 million passengers during the first six months of 2026, reflecting continued demand for international travel despite geopolitical challenges affecting some markets.

While passenger traffic to the Middle East softened during the period, the airport recorded growth in other regions, including North America (up 1.6%) and Asia-Pacific (up 7.9%). Transfer passengers increased by 5.4%, while cargo volumes rose by nearly 1%.

The airport also continued to invest in passenger services and infrastructure. Heathrow completed a £1 billion security upgrade programme, becoming the first major hub airport to install next-generation security scanners across all terminals. The new system allows passengers to leave liquids and laptops inside their cabin bags during security screening.

Construction has also begun on a new entrance for Terminal 4, which includes an upgraded check-in area, measures to reduce vehicle congestion and a larger multi-storey car park. Heathrow has also upgraded key parts of the baggage handling system at Terminal 2 to improve operational reliability.

For the six months ended 30 June 2026, Heathrow reported revenue of £1.729 billion, a 0.3% increase compared with the same period last year. Adjusted operating costs rose due to higher government taxes, including business rates and national insurance contributions, as well as continued investment in technology.

Adjusted EBITDA declined to £915 million, while profit before tax increased significantly to £447 million. The airport reported £3.8 billion in liquidity, providing sufficient financial resources to meet its obligations over the next 18 months.

Heathrow said its long-term expansion plans remain on track as the UK Government continues consultation on the draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement. The proposal includes the construction of a third runway, which the airport says would increase trade capacity, support employment and improve connectivity across the UK.

Commenting on the results, Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said the airport had maintained strong passenger demand and customer service despite ongoing geopolitical challenges. He added that the planned expansion is intended to improve connectivity, support UK businesses and create employment opportunities across the country.
