La Résidence Phou Vao Reopens in Luang Prabang After Heritage-Led Renovation
La Résidence Phou Vao has reopened following a comprehensive renovation that respects its historical character while introducing updated design and modern comforts. Located on Phou Vao Hill, the property overlooks Luang Prabang and its UNESCO-listed temples and surrounding mountains, continuing its legacy as a former official guest house for state visitors and dignitaries.
The hotel was acquired by HMD Asia, the operator of Shinta Mani Hotels, from Belmond. The renovation was led by Sanya Souvanna Phouma, Brand & Heritage Architect and a descendant of the Lao royal family, with a focus on maintaining cultural integrity.
The refreshed identity, uniforms and visual elements combine Lao heritage with French influences. Uniform designs now feature subtle hand-finished embroidery rather than traditional silhouettes, while arrival and departure experiences reflect this dual influence through music inspired by Lao royal traditions and French jazz.
Architectural updates by Bloom Architects improve light, circulation and spatial flow throughout the property. Guest rooms have been reconfigured to enhance sightlines, bring in natural light, and connect interiors with gardens and the surrounding landscape. A layered lighting approach supports a calm atmosphere across different times of day.

Accessibility upgrades include improved pathways, bathrooms and transitions between spaces. New connecting-suite options support group and family travel, while suites now open onto expanded terraces designed for outdoor dining and relaxation.
Across the hotel’s 37 suites, updated timber finishes, green accents, and custom detailing create a balanced, warm interior palette. Bathrooms have been redesigned with terrazzo bathtubs, walk-in showers and dedicated dressing areas. Updated sleep systems, lighting controls and discreet in-room technology enhance comfort while maintaining a quiet environment.

Art throughout the property reflects Lao culture and the history of French exploration in the region. Works inspired by local craftsmanship, historical maps and archival illustrations by explorers such as Henri Mouhot, Auguste Pavie and Doudart de Lagrée are displayed alongside pieces by Lao artist Tiao Nith.
The arrival area has been redesigned to create clearer sightlines toward Phou Si Pagoda and smoother transitions to shared spaces, including a new bar and a boutique featuring locally sourced items. The dining offering now includes La Brasserie de la Résidence, featuring an open kitchen and views across the city, with menus that combine French brasserie dishes with Lao culinary traditions.

Guest experiences emphasise Luang Prabang’s spiritual and natural setting, with activities including guided heritage walks, waterfall breakfasts, and sunset cruises on the hotel’s private boat along the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.
Planned additions for 2026 include a wellness centre, a Presidential Suite and updated meeting facilities. According to Anthony Lark, Executive Director of HMD Asia, the renovation marks the first phase of a broader plan to evolve the guest experience while remaining rooted in local culture.
Set above the UNESCO-listed old town, La Résidence Phou Vao continues to offer elevated views and a peaceful setting, maintaining its role as a culturally grounded retreat closely connected to the character of Luang Prabang.
