KLM and Pilots Reach Preliminary Agreement to Boost Operations and Stability

KLM and the Dutch pilots’ union VNV have reached an agreement in principle aimed at enhancing operational capacity and supporting the airline’s financial recovery.
The agreement includes measures that will allow KLM to increase flight operations, with expectations of over 10,000 additional flights and millions of extra passengers transported. Pilots have agreed to work one extra day per month during the summer of 2026 and, if needed, an additional day on weekends once a quarter. Temporary adjustments to vacation days have also been introduced to help bridge staffing gaps.
According to KLM, the agreement will ensure adequate pilot availability across all roles, supported by targeted investments in training and scheduling flexibility. Simulator training and exams will now be permitted on weekends, allowing KLM to respond faster to market demand.

“This agreement allows us to expand flight operations and supports the goals of our Back-on-Track program. It’s a step forward for KLM and for all our colleagues,” said Miriam Kartman, HR Director at KLM.
The partnership includes provisions for compensation, such as formalizing the annual travel discount scheme for pilots. Additionally, the agreement paves the way for the efficient introduction of the Airbus A350 into KLM’s fleet, including upgrades to the pilot rest areas to accommodate long-haul operations better.
Ruud Stegers, Chairman of VNV, said:

“This is a joint effort toward a more resilient KLM. Pilots are actively contributing to the company’s progress, and KLM is recognizing their role in building a more sustainable future.”
The agreement will be submitted to VNV members for approval in September.
