Indian Railways Experiences Spike in Summer Travel Demand

The demand for train travel in India has increased significantly this summer, with a 20% rise in searches for train tickets compared to last year. This surge is driven by various factors, including people looking to escape the heat, weekend getaways, election travel, and summer vacations. As a result, there are long waitlists for trains to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

For late May travel, wait times for sleeper classes exceed 70-100 passengers on routes like New Delhi-Mumbai and New Delhi-Bengaluru. The most booked train route for May 2024 is between Mumbai and Pune, a popular choice for weekend escapes to the scenic hill station. Other popular routes include Chennai to Bengaluru, Mumbai to Surat, Ahmedabad to Mumbai, and Kanpur to New Delhi.

Due to the heatwave, the demand for air-conditioned trains is notably high, with a 10% increase in searches for AC trains compared to last year. This reflects the priority given to passenger comfort during the summer travel season. Data from IRCTC shows a significant shift towards AC bookings in Q3FY24, with AC class bookings reaching 550 lakhs compared to 456 lakhs for non-AC and 140 lakhs for the second sitting, highlighting the clear preference for AC travel.
