Scheduled to open in late 2028, InterContinental Port Moresby will form part of a mixed-use development located in the capital’s diplomatic precinct, which also houses key government institutions. The 179-room hotel will be situated near the National Parliament House, the Supreme and National Court, central government agencies, and several foreign embassies, positioning it to serve government officials, corporate travellers, and international visitors.
The hotel is expected to feature an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant, lobby lounge, and pool bar. Additional facilities will include more than 600 square metres of meeting and event space, a Club Lounge, fitness centre, and outdoor pool.
The broader development will incorporate approximately 6,000 square metres of office space, contributing to the area’s commercial infrastructure.
InterContinental Port Moresby will join IHG’s existing portfolio in PNG, which includes Holiday Inn Port Moresby, Holiday Inn Express Port Moresby, and Crowne Plaza Residences Port Moresby. With this addition, IHG will expand its presence across multiple segments in the country.
The signing also supports IHG’s continued growth across Australasia and the Pacific. The company’s Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio in the region currently includes 16 operating InterContinental hotels and two in the pipeline. Globally, the InterContinental brand has more than 230 open hotels, with an additional 100 properties under development.

Matt Tripolone, IHG Hotels & Resorts Managing Director, Australasia & Pacific, said, “We’re delighted to partner with GPPL to bring InterContinental to Papua New Guinea. As the nation’s capital continues to strengthen its position on the regional and global stage, InterContinental Port Moresby will set a new standard for luxury hospitality.
Papua New Guinea’s capital is entering an exciting new era of growth, underpinned by large-scale LNG investments as well as the forthcoming launch of the country’s first NRL team in 2028. These developments are driving strong demand for world-class hospitality, making this the ideal time to introduce the InterContinental brand to the market.”
Hon. Grand-Chief Sir Chris Haiveta, GCL KCMG & MP., Governor of Gulf Province and Chairman of Gulf Province Properties Limited, said, “This is a proud moment for Gulf Province and Papua New Guinea. Partnering with IHG to introduce its prestigious InterContinental brand reflects our confidence in the future of Port Moresby and the Gulf Province. InterContinental Port Moresby will be a destination that welcomes leaders, travellers and guests from around the world in a true Melanesian spirit of Papua New Guinea.”
