Emirates Engineering Facility to Support Aircraft Maintenance at Dubai South

Emirates has officially broken ground on its new US$ 5.1 billion engineering complex at Dubai South, marking a major step in the airline’s long-term aviation infrastructure plans.

The new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility is expected to support the airline’s future engineering operations and expand its in-house engineering and maintenance capabilities.

The project is being developed by China Railway Construction Corporation, with Artelia appointed as the project consultant.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Tim Clark, Khalifa Al Zaffin and Dai Hegen.

Spanning 1.1 million square metres, the facility will include hangars capable of servicing 28 wide-body aircraft simultaneously, along with two dedicated paint hangars. The complex will also feature maintenance workshops, logistics and storage areas, training facilities and office spaces for Emirates Engineering teams.

According to Emirates, the facility will include the world’s largest free-span aircraft hangar and a dedicated landing gear workshop. The project also targets LEED Platinum certification through sustainability measures, including rooftop solar panel installations.

Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2030, with the new hangar complex initially supporting heavy maintenance operations and additional engineering projects transferred from the existing Emirates Engineering Centre at Dubai International Airport.

The development also supports broader aviation infrastructure growth around Al Maktoum International Airport as Dubai continues expanding its aviation and logistics ecosystem.
