Delta Report Highlights Shift Towards Real-World Travel Experiences
‘Connection Index’ Examines Why Travellers Value In-Person Experiences
Delta Air Lines has released a new global trend report, Connection Index: Why We Fly, examining how and why people travel today. The findings point to a growing preference for in-person experiences, as travellers look to move beyond digital interactions and engage more directly with the world around them.
The report explores how travel is increasingly shaped by a desire for meaningful connections, both with destinations and with other people, particularly at a time when much of daily life is mediated through screens.
Travel as a Response to Digital Fatigue
According to the research, many travellers are placing greater value on real-world experiences. As digital content becomes more prevalent, including material generated or altered through artificial intelligence, there is a stronger inclination to experience places and moments first-hand.
The Delta report indicates that 79% of global travellers believe in-person experiences carry more meaning in this environment, while 73% say they have taken a trip to see something they initially discovered online.
Connection and Social Interaction

Travel continues to foster human connection. Around 80% of respondents said travel helps them meet new people and reduce feelings of loneliness. Additionally, 38% noted that travel allows them to be more present in their personal relationships.
The findings also show that 84% of travellers maintain a strong desire to explore new destinations and connect with different cultures, regardless of wider global circumstances. This sentiment is particularly evident among younger travellers, including Gen Z and Millennials.
Changing Motivations for Travel

The Connection Index highlights how travel motivations are evolving. Rather than focusing solely on destinations, travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that allow them to engage more directly with local culture, people and environments.
The Delta report suggests that travel remains an important way for individuals to step away from routine, gain new perspectives and build connections that extend beyond digital platforms.
