In a recent open letter to Congress, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian joined nine other aviation leaders representing major U.S. passenger and cargo carriers, calling for federal aviation workers to be paid during government shutdowns.

The letter highlights the impact of funding lapses on frontline employees, particularly those responsible for maintaining airport security and operations.

On Friday, March 13, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers received paychecks showing zero pay following a funding lapse that began on February 14. The aviation leaders described the situation as unacceptable, noting the financial strain on workers who continue to perform their duties without compensation.

“It’s difficult to manage basic expenses like food, transportation, and housing when pay is disrupted,” the letter stated.

Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Ed Bastian addressed the issue, urging lawmakers to reach a resolution on funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

He emphasized the role of security personnel and frontline staff in keeping the aviation system functioning, and raised concerns about the impact of delayed wages on these workers.

Bastian also noted that public support remains strong for ensuring federal employees are paid, and called on policymakers to act to resolve the situation.

As the partial U.S. government shutdown continues, Delta stated it remains focused on maintaining safe and reliable operations for its passengers while supporting its partners across the aviation sector.

The airline has advised customers to check the departure airport’s website for updated wait times and to use Delta’s app or website to manage their travel plans.

At the same time, Delta said it will continue engaging with policymakers to support efforts to ensure federal aviation workers receive consistent pay, even during future funding lapses.
