Delta and Best Defense Foundation Return to Normandy for Legacy Flight

Delta Air Lines, in partnership with the Best Defense Foundation (BDF) and Michelin, will once again operate its Normandy Legacy Flight, bringing World War II veterans to Normandy, France, to mark the anniversary of the D-Day landings. This year’s journey also coincides with the lead-up to the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Veterans and students travel together to preserve history

The 2026 programme will include 25 WWII veterans, along with caregivers, many of whom are Delta employees and veterans. Nearly 30 students will also take part through BDF’s NextGen initiative and the Freedom Prize programme, creating opportunities for shared learning across generations.

The group will depart from Atlanta on June 2 and arrive in Deauville, Normandy on June 3. During their time in France, participants will attend a series of commemorative events recognizing the service and sacrifice of Allied forces.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the programme reflects the airline’s focus on connecting people and communities, while also recognizing the role of veterans in shaping history. Donnie Edwards, President and Co-Founder of the Best Defense Foundation, described the journey as a meaningful return for veterans to places connected to their service.

Continued support for veterans and commemorative initiatives

The programme includes personalised care for each veteran, supported by trained Delta volunteers and members of the airline’s Veterans Business Resource Group. The initiative is managed in partnership with Virginie Durr, who has been recognized for her work in strengthening ties between the United States and France and supporting veteran-focused programmes.

Students participating in the programme will visit historic sites, engage with veterans and share their experiences within their communities after returning home. The Freedom Prize, organized by the Normandy Region, will also involve young participants recognizing efforts that support freedom and human rights.

Delta will continue to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for the flight through a book-and-claim approach, as part of its broader emissions-reduction plans.

The Normandy Legacy Flight remains part of Delta’s ongoing efforts to support veterans through partnerships, community programmes and employee engagement initiatives.
