Alaska Airlines Breaks Ground on New Hangar at Portland International Airport

Alaska Airlines Hangar Project to Expand Maintenance Capacity at Portland Hub

Alaska Airlines has marked the ceremonial groundbreaking of a new maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport (PDX), reinforcing its long-term investment in one of its key operational hubs.

The new facility will be built adjacent to the airline’s existing Horizon Air Operations Centre and Maintenance Hangar at PDX, subject to final permitting approvals. Once completed, the project will add approximately 125,000 square feet of aircraft maintenance space along with an additional 60,000 square feet dedicated to offices, engine workshops, machine shops, sheet metal facilities and support functions.

The hangar will support maintenance operations for both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines fleets, enabling technicians to work on up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody aircraft simultaneously.

According to the airline, the additional capacity will help improve operational efficiency by reducing aircraft downtime and easing maintenance demand across its wider network.

New Jobs and Economic Impact

The development is expected to create more than 100 skilled positions for maintenance technicians, engineers and aviation support professionals in the Portland area.

The Port of Portland said the project reflects the ongoing partnership between the airport and Alaska Airlines while contributing to regional economic activity and employment opportunities.

Continued Investment in Portland

Alaska Airlines has served Portland since 1979 and continues to expand its presence at the airport. The airline recently increased its airport lobby footprint at PDX and opened a new 14,000-square-foot Alaska Lounge.

This summer, the carrier is also introducing additional flight options from Portland, including year-round service to Everett/Paine Field and Pasco–Tri-Cities, as well as seasonal flights to Baltimore, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Jackson Hole.

The new maintenance facility forms part of Alaska Airlines’ broader strategy to strengthen operations in Portland while supporting future network growth and fleet maintenance requirements.
