Airbus Unveils Integrated AI-Powered System for Forest Firefighting

Airbus Demonstrates Breakthrough Integrated System for Precision Forest Firefighting

Airbus has successfully completed a first-of-its-kind trial showcasing an integrated ecosystem for forest firefighting—linking aircraft, helicopters, drones and ground crews through advanced communication and data processing systems. The demonstration highlights how real-time connectivity and AI-driven insights can significantly improve response times and firefighting accuracy.

The trial brought together multiple aerial and ground assets, including the Airbus H130 FlightLab helicopter, an ATR 72 test aircraft, a Cirrus SR20 light aircraft, four drones—including the Airbus Aliaca—and ground vehicles from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Le Gard (SDIS 30).

To connect these elements, Airbus deployed a private mobile network “bubble” integrated with Agnet, its mission-critical communication platform for emergency services. This enabled seamless data sharing and coordination between all units in real time.

Real-time data and AI-powered decision making

During the exercise, drones and aircraft captured live visual and infrared imagery of simulated fire zones. This data was transmitted to a mobile command centre, where it was processed, geolocated and combined with satellite imagery, terrain mapping, wind conditions and the positioning of firefighters on the ground.

Using AI-powered systems, Airbus generated a comprehensive operational picture, allowing teams to determine optimal flight paths and precise water drop points. These instructions were then relayed instantly to aerial units, including helicopters equipped with precision drop systems and the ATR 72 acting as a water bomber.

Tested in real-world scenarios

The trials were conducted at the Garrigues military camp in Nîmes, in collaboration with regional fire services and Entente Valabre. The scenarios were designed to replicate real wildfire conditions, ensuring the system’s effectiveness in complex, high-pressure environments.

Unveiled on the global stage

The integrated solution was presented for the first time at the Aerial Firefighting Conference & Exhibition 2026 in Rome, marking a major milestone in Airbus’s efforts to develop advanced firefighting technologies.

Enhancing future firefighting capabilities

This initiative builds on Airbus’s broader portfolio of aerial firefighting solutions, including aircraft such as the A400M equipped with firefighting kits, helicopters with water buckets, and reconnaissance drones.

By integrating these assets into a unified, data-driven ecosystem, Airbus aims to significantly improve coordination between air and ground teams—reducing response times, increasing precision and ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of wildfire suppression efforts.

As climate change continues to intensify the frequency and severity of forest fires worldwide, such innovations represent a critical step toward safer, faster and more sustainable emergency response systems.
