AirAsia Adds Two Direct Routes to Pontianak, Enhancing Malaysia–Indonesia Connectivity

AirAsia Malaysia has announced the launch of two new direct routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Kuching with Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan. With this move, the airline continues to expand its regional network between Malaysia and Indonesia. AirAsia is currently the only carrier offering international flights to Pontianak.
The expansion follows AirAsia’s recent growth in Indonesia, including the launch of the Kuala Lumpur–Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service, set to begin in September. With Pontianak added to its network, AirAsia Malaysia now operates 223 weekly flights across 17 destinations in Indonesia.
This development aims to support bilateral connectivity and contribute to Indonesia’s national goal of welcoming 16 million international tourists, with Malaysia as a key market.
The announcement was made during the Sarawak Travel Fair held in Pontianak, opened by the Governor of West Kalimantan, Mr. Drs. Ria Norsan.
He remarked, “We welcome AirAsia’s initiative to connect Pontianak with Kuala Lumpur and Kuching. This route enhances accessibility for tourists and supports trade, investment, and travel for business, leisure, and healthcare.”
The Malaysian Consul in Pontianak, Azizul Zekri bin Abd Rahim, added, “This route marks a meaningful step in strengthening ties between Malaysia and West Kalimantan. With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaching, the timing supports increased tourism, cultural exchange, and regional mobility.”
AirAsia Malaysia CEO, Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, said, “We are expanding our flight offerings to meet the growing demand for travel between Malaysia and West Kalimantan. By connecting Pontianak with our hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, we’re helping to facilitate accessible travel for various purposes.”
Sharzede Datu Hj Salleh Askor, CEO of the Sarawak Tourism Board, commented, “This route improves access for Indonesian travellers seeking healthcare services in Sarawak and enhances tourism and business opportunities for both regions. The direct Kuching–Pontianak connection reduces travel time and cost significantly.”

To celebrate the launch, tickets are now available for booking via the AirAsia MOVE app (formerly AirAsia Superapp) and at airasia.com. Promotional fares are valid for bookings from 12 September to 3 August 2025, for travel between 12 September 2025 and 28 March 2026.
