Star Air Survey Highlights Affordability as Key Factor for Regional Airline Travellers
Star Air Survey Shows Growing Demand for Affordable Regional Air Travel
A new Star Air Survey has found that affordable ticket prices remain the primary reason why Indian travellers choose regional airlines. Conducted among more than 20,000 passengers across cities including Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur, Delhi NCR and other regional destinations, the survey provides insight into changing travel preferences across India’s regional aviation sector.
The survey found that 60% of respondents consider affordable fares the most important factor when booking a regional flight. Other key considerations included convenient flight schedules (53%), airport proximity (47%), airline reputation (43%) and recommendations from friends and family (38%).
The findings also indicate that regional air travel is becoming more accessible. Around 37% of respondents identified themselves as first-time or infrequent flyers, reflecting increasing demand for air connectivity in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
For many new travellers, navigating airports remains a challenge. 31% said airport navigation was their biggest concern, while 26% highlighted security procedures and 21% were concerned about the boarding process. Despite these concerns, 77% of passengers rated the welcome and assistance provided by airline staff as either “excellent” or “good”.
Passengers also identified areas where airlines could improve. Nearly 49% called for better on-time performance, 44% wanted improved cleanliness and onboard comfort, and 38% said friendlier customer service would enhance their travel experience. Efficient baggage handling and clear communication were also highlighted as important priorities.
The survey also highlighted the importance of expanding regional connectivity. Eighty-eight per cent of respondents said it is either “extremely important” or “very important” for airlines to connect smaller towns with major metropolitan cities, reflecting the growing role of regional aviation in supporting business, education, healthcare and personal travel.
When asked why they preferred flying over other modes of transport, 68% cited shorter travel times, while 59% pointed to convenience. In addition, 73% said they would recommend regional airline travel to friends and family.

Commenting on the findings, Captain Simran Singh Tiwana, CEO of Star Air, said the survey reflects changing travel expectations and the growing role of regional aviation in improving connectivity across India. He added that the airline remains focused on providing safe, reliable and welcoming travel experiences while strengthening links between smaller cities and major destinations.
The Star Air survey suggests that affordability, reliable services and wider connectivity continue to influence the growth of regional air travel in India.
