Kansai International Airport Launches KAGAMI+ Exhibition Through KIX CULTURE GATE Project
Kansai International Airport has unveiled a new cultural attraction through its KIX CULTURE GATE Project, presenting KAGAMI+, the acclaimed mixed reality work by legendary Japanese composer and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto. The initiative transforms the airport into a cultural destination while offering passengers a unique pre-departure experience.
The special exhibition features an automated grand piano installation in the public area of Terminal 1, where Sakamoto’s preserved performance data recreates his iconic music alongside immersive LED visual displays inspired by the world of KAGAMI+.

KAGAMI+ Brings Music and Technology Together
The installation showcases five of Sakamoto’s celebrated compositions including Aqua, energy flow, put your hands up, Railroad Man and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. By combining advanced technology with preserved performance data, visitors can experience the artist’s distinctive musical style in an entirely new format.
The airport exhibition will remain on display until 30 September 2026, allowing travellers to enjoy a unique cultural experience before their flights.
Celebrating the Legacy of Ryuichi Sakamoto
Developed with creative studio Tin Drum, KAGAMI+ builds on the original mixed reality experience that digitally recreates Sakamoto’s piano performances using advanced 3D imaging technology. The full immersive exhibition runs from 27 June to 12 October 2026 at VS. in Japan, featuring mixed reality visuals, photography, text and a signature fragrance created by the late composer.
Sakamoto, who passed away in 2023, earned worldwide recognition through his solo work, his role in Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) and award-winning film scores including The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
Enhancing the Airport Passenger Experience
The KIX CULTURE GATE Project aims to position Kansai International Airport as more than a transport hub by introducing cultural experiences that celebrate the heritage of the Kansai region and Japan. The airport continues to collaborate with partners to create engaging experiences that enrich the passenger journey while showcasing Japanese art, music and innovation.
