Schiphol and KLM Sign Agreement for Airport Redevelopment
Schiphol Redevelopment Plan Includes KLM Cargo and Catering Relocation
Schiphol Airport and KLM have signed an agreement to relocate KLM’s cargo operations and catering facilities as part of the long-term redevelopment of Schiphol Airport.
Under the agreement, KLM’s cargo activities will move from Schiphol Centre to a new cargo area on the opposite side of the Kaagbaan runway, while KLM’s catering operations will relocate to Schiphol North. The move supports the implementation of the Schiphol Centre Master Plan, which outlines the airport’s development strategy for the next 25 years.
Supporting Future Airport Growth
The Schiphol Centre Master Plan aims to modernise the airport while improving passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability. The redevelopment is designed to balance future growth with environmental considerations, including efforts to reduce emissions and noise.
The agreement between Schiphol and KLM enables several key developments. It creates space for future aircraft stands capable of accommodating larger aircraft, supports the planned construction of Terminal South and strengthens infrastructure for the Dutch air cargo sector.
New Terminal South Planned
According to Schiphol, the existing terminal capacity is under pressure due to current passenger volumes and the increasing use of larger aircraft.
The planned Terminal South, alongside the A-pier scheduled to enter service next year, is intended to provide additional capacity and improve passenger flow throughout the airport.
The redevelopment is also expected to enhance accessibility and operational efficiency across the airport campus.
Modern Cargo Facilities in Schiphol South-East
As part of the project, KLM’s cargo operations will move to a new facility, Vracht 15, in Schiphol South-East.
The new cargo area will be designed to support logistics operations with improved accessibility, modern infrastructure and additional space for future development. The project also aims to improve working conditions and support sustainability initiatives in the cargo sector.
KLM Catering Services and Topside facilities will also move to new locations within the airport estate.
Sustainability Remains a Key Focus
Schiphol continues to work towards reducing emissions from airport and ground operations. The airport’s target is to achieve a 90 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030 compared with 2019 levels.
New buildings developed as part of the redevelopment programme will be constructed without gas connections and will follow current sustainability standards.
Next Phase of Development
Following the signing of the agreement, Schiphol and KLM will begin the next stage of the project.
The design phase for the new cargo facility in Schiphol South-East is expected to start shortly, with the architectural tender process already underway. Additional projects linked to the relocation of operations, the redevelopment of Schiphol Centre, and the construction of the new cargo area will also move forward in the coming months.
The agreement marks another step in Schiphol’s long-term redevelopment programme, aimed at preparing the airport for future operational and passenger requirements.
