The Barcelona based airline Volotea has become a long-time partner of Airbus by choosing the A320 Family for its advantages to develop regional low cost operations. Volotea also benefits from Airbus Services that further improve its operational efficiency. The latest illustration of this close cooperation is the signing of an agreement for Airframe Services during MRO Europe. It combines various upgrades into a contract for Volotea’s current and future aircraft, including Descent Profile Optimiser (DPO).

DPO is a fuel saving initiative which updates the Flight Management System (FMS) performance database by optimizing the engine idle model in descent. The solution is available on A320 Family (Except on A319CJ and A320LIP) and A330 Family aircraft and is a software only upgrade which enables a longer cruise level, reduces deceleration level-off and results in fuel savings benefits.

Eduard Diviu, chief operating officer of Volotea said: “The collaboration between Volotea and Airbus is strong, and we are continuously integrating new services to enhance our operations. Our commitment to safety and sustainability is reinforced through Airbus solutions, which keep our fleet updated. On one hand, Skywise helps us identify and anticipate technical issues, minimising disruptions to our flight schedule and ensuring we deliver the best service to our passengers. On the other hand, the innovative Descent Profile Optimization (DPO) system developed by Airbus optimises fuel consumption and reduces carbon emissions. This integration into our fleet is crucial for advancing towards a more sustainable aviation industry and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.” “Furthermore”, adds Delphine Gianoglio, Head of Airbus Commercial Services Europe, “We actively support our customers to achieve their decarbonisation goals. In that endeavour, Volotea and Airbus will work together to ensure that every future aircraft joining the Volotea fleet is equipped with DPO.”

The selection of DPO is part of the airline’s initiatives to reduce its overall fuel consumption, and is a signal of Volotea’s commitment to its decarbonisation roadmap. This agreement is the first in a series to be signed by both parties, which will offer a cross-services approach to support Volotea’s fleet growth strategy.
