The Standard to Debut in Austin, Reimagining South Congress Hotel as Cultural Hub

Hyatt Hotels Corporation is set to introduce its lifestyle brand, The Standard, to Texas with the opening of The Standard, Austin in Spring 2027. The project marks the brand’s first U.S. debut in over a decade and will see the transformation of the existing South Congress Hotel into a culturally driven hospitality destination.

Located on South Congress Avenue in Austin, the hotel will be developed in collaboration with Timberline Real Estate Partners. The redevelopment aims to reposition the property as a dynamic social and cultural hub, catering to both local residents and international travellers.

The Standard, Austin is envisioned as more than a traditional hotel, with plans to incorporate social wellness experiences, a rooftop pool, and a diverse mix of restaurants and bars. Guest rooms will combine global design influences with locally inspired craftsmanship, reflecting Austin’s distinctive cultural identity.

The project is being led by a team of industry and local creative leaders, including Amar Lalvani, alongside James Moody, Stan Nix, and architect Michael Hsu. Interior design will be delivered through a collaboration between Goodrich Design and The Standard’s in-house design team led by Verena Haller.

“I have always loved the South Congress Hotel and have long envisioned its potential to be The Standard, Austin,” said Amar Lalvani. “We’ve assembled an incredible team of Austin-based friends and collaborators who will both honor the property’s legacy and breathe new life into it. Austin deserves a hotel that reflects the cultural capital it has always been and the world-class city it has become.”

“South Congress has always been a place where Austin’s past and future meet,” said Stan Nix. “Bringing The Standard brand here feels like the natural next step—a commitment to the street’s legacy and an opportunity to create something globally relevant, socially vibrant, and built for the long term.”

“We’re trying to build a unique and creative place that feels good any time you walk into it—morning, night, weekday, weekend,” said James Moody. “Something that lets you take care of yourself or let go a little, depending on the day. Austin doesn’t quite have that yet.

Hyatt’s Bunkhouse Hotels team will also support the project, bringing local expertise and continuity with the neighbourhood’s established character. The Standard brand has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Austin market through its collaboration with Bunkhouse properties over the past decade.

Globally, The Standard continues to expand its footprint with locations in cities such as London, Ibiza, Bangkok, and Brussels, with upcoming openings planned in Lisbon and Mexico City.

Positioned as a “cultural playground,” The Standard, Austin will offer a fluid, experience-led environment where guests can engage with a mix of dining, social, and creative spaces throughout the day and night. The development reflects both the evolution of the South Congress district and the broader trend of lifestyle-driven hospitality concepts shaping urban destinations.
