SpiceJet Struggles Continue

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has placed SpiceJet under “enhanced surveillance” for the second time in two years in response to complaints of cancelled flights and financial strain.

The aviation authority carried out a special assessment earlier this month and found “certain deficiencies” in response to accusations that the carrier was forced to halt flights from Dubai due to non-payment of dues.

The airline “has once again, and with immediate effect, been placed under enhanced surveillance,” according to the DGCA, which said that this entails more spot checks and/or audits at night in order to guarantee operational safety.

SpiceJet was forced to run several empty flights out of Dubai because airport authorities there would not allow customers to check in because the airline had not paid certain taxes. It was said to be the second disruption of that kind this month.

A SpiceJet representative explained that the cancellations were due to “operational issues” and that the impacted passengers were offered a complete refund or accommodations on other airlines or on subsequent flights.

The firm reported that all booked flights from Dubai are presently running according to schedule. SpiceJet announced earlier this month that it had settled with the Mumbai airport for “a minor financial matter,” just hours after receiving notice of “temporary disruptions” via a since-deleted social media post.

According to reports, SpiceJet was also under “enhanced surveillance” in July of last year. An official informed news agency PTI that this was because of several financial problems and the fact that different lessors were attempting to reclaim leased aircraft. But the airline refuted any such information.
