SFO Shares Summer Travel Advice for 2026 Season

San Francisco Airport Prepares for Busy Summer Travel Period

San Francisco International Airport has announced the start of the 2026 summer travel season, along with updated travel guidance to help passengers move through the airport more efficiently.

The airport expects increased passenger traffic beginning Friday, 22 May 2026, with around 163,000 travellers forecast to pass through SFO on that day alone. Between Memorial Day and Labour Day, the airport expects approximately 16.8 million passengers, an increase of around 3% compared to summer 2025.

SFO has advised travellers to arrive at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international departures to allow sufficient time for check-in, security, and boarding procedures.

The airport also highlighted its “SFO Gate Explorer” programme, which allows non-ticketed visitors to access post-security areas without purchasing a flight ticket. The programme enables visitors to meet arriving or departing passengers and to access airport facilities, including dining outlets, retail stores, artwork, and exhibitions.

Due to increased seasonal demand, SFO said parking garages are expected to remain near capacity during peak travel periods. Travellers have been encouraged to use public transport or shared rides where possible. For those planning to drive, the airport recommends reserving parking spaces in advance through its online booking system.

SFO also continues to offer remote baggage check-in services from the Long-Term Parking garage and the Rental Car Centre. The service is available for domestic passengers travelling with airlines including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

San Francisco Airport said the service is intended to make the travel process more convenient for passengers arriving from long-term parking and rental car facilities.
