Ministry of Tourism Marks 12th International Day of Yoga with Nationwide Events

Ministry of Tourism celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with events and wellness initiatives held across the country, reinforcing its commitment to promoting holistic health and well-being within India’s tourism and hospitality sector.

The nationwide celebrations were organised under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the importance of yoga in supporting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy living.

Tourism Minister Participates in Yoga Session in Maharashtra

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat participated in a yoga session at Shantikshetra Ashram in Karjat, Maharashtra.

During the event, the minister emphasised the role of yoga in maintaining balance in life and supporting both personal well-being and national development. He also highlighted how yoga has evolved into a global movement through India’s efforts to promote the ancient practice worldwide.

Special Yoga Programme Held in New Delhi

The Ministry of Tourism partnered with India Tourism Development Corporation and Standing Conference of Public Enterprises to organise a special International Day of Yoga programme at The Ashok.

The event brought together senior officials from government departments, public sector enterprises and tourism stakeholders. Yoga sessions were conducted by instructors from the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and attracted more than 150 participants representing over 10 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).

Focus on Healthy Ageing and Wellness

Speaking at the event, Bhuvnesh Kumar described yoga as India’s timeless contribution to global wellness and stressed the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle practices that support longevity and overall well-being.

The ministry noted that the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” encourages individuals to integrate yoga into their daily lives to improve physical vitality, emotional resilience and mental health.

Hospitality Education Institutions Join Celebrations

Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) operating under the Ministry of Tourism also organised yoga sessions and awareness programmes across India.

Students, faculty members and staff participated in activities aimed at promoting wellness and encouraging future hospitality professionals to incorporate healthy lifestyle practices into both their personal and professional lives.

Supporting Wellness Across the Tourism Ecosystem

The Ministry of Tourism stated that these nationwide celebrations reflect its broader efforts to promote wellness, resilience and healthier lifestyles throughout India’s tourism and hospitality ecosystem.

By encouraging participation from government organisations, hospitality institutions and industry stakeholders, the ministry aims to strengthen awareness of yoga’s role in supporting healthier communities and sustainable well-being.
