Lufthansa Group Welcomes New Airport Transit Policy for Indian Passengers

The Lufthansa Group has welcomed the decision by the Federal Republic of Germany to remove the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals travelling to third countries via German airports. The new policy came into effect on 3 June 2026 and is expected to simplify travel for passengers connecting through Germany’s aviation hubs.

The change, announced by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in New Delhi, allows eligible Indian travellers to transit through German airports without requiring an airport transit visa when travelling onward to another destination.

According to Lufthansa Group, the policy will help make journeys through Germany more convenient while strengthening air connectivity between India, Germany and destinations across Europe and other regions.

The Lufthansa Group currently operates more than 70 weekly flights between India and Europe and has maintained a presence in the Indian market for over six decades. India remains an important market within the airline group’s international network.

As part of its ongoing expansion plans, Lufthansa Group continues to invest in services and products for Indian travellers. These include the introduction of Lufthansa’s Allegris cabin product on additional Boeing 787-9 services from Delhi and Hyderabad, as well as the launch of SWISS’s direct route between Bengaluru and Zurich in the 2026 winter schedule.

The airline group is also introducing its Future Onboard Experience (FOX) programme across long-haul cabins, focusing on enhanced comfort, choice and personalised travel experiences. Additional capacity is being added through increased SWISS Airbus A330 services between Delhi and Zurich and expanded Lufthansa Airbus A380 operations between Mumbai and Munich.

The introduction of visa-free airport transit is expected to benefit travellers connecting through Germany to destinations across Europe, North America and other international markets served by Lufthansa Group airlines and their partners.

Lufthansa Group operates across multiple aviation sectors, including passenger airlines, logistics, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), aviation training and technology services. In 2025, the group carried more than 135 million passengers and generated revenue of €39.6 billion.

The latest policy change is expected to further boost travel demand between India and Germany while offering Indian passengers a simpler transit experience when connecting through German airports.
