Loong Air Introduces Xi’an to Penang Flight

Tourism Malaysia has announced the launch of a new route by Loong Air, connecting Xi’an, China, to Penang, Malaysia, through the Penang International Airport. The flight will operate twice a week, every Monday and Friday, using an Airbus with a capacity of 168 seats.

The flight received a warm welcome from several dignitaries, including Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, the Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, and YBhg. Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, the Director General of Tourism Malaysia. Also present was Madam Ding Qiao, the Vice Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang. Additionally, representatives from Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad, officials from Loong Air, and Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd (GTR)—the exclusive ground handling partner for Loong Air—were in attendance, along with Penang state representatives, members of the media, and other key stakeholders.

“This new route is part of Loong Air’s strategy to expand its international reach, a result of YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture’s efforts during his official working visit to China. This expansion is also a testament to Malaysia as a preferred destination for Chinese tourists, especially from northern China,” said YBhg. Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia.

The introduction of this route supports the goals of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. In recent months, Malaysia has experienced a significant increase in tourist arrivals from China, with 3,038,314 visitors recorded in 2024. This marks a remarkable growth of 132.7% compared to the previous year. The visa-free policy, which has been extended until December 2026, along with the increasing connectivity between Malaysia and China, is expected to further boost these numbers and enhance cultural exchange between the two countries.
