KIX Celebrates 600 Million Passengers Since Opening in 1994
Kansai International Airport (KIX) has achieved a major milestone, welcoming its 600 millionth passenger since opening in September 1994.
The achievement was reached in May 2026, marking 31 years of operations for the airport, which is recognised as the world’s first fully artificial-island airport.
Airport operator Kansai Airports announced the milestone and thanked passengers, airlines and industry partners for their continued support.
Passenger Numbers Continue to Grow
Since opening on 4 September 1994, KIX has handled a total of 600 million international and domestic passengers.
The cumulative figures include:
- 400 million international passengers
- 190 million domestic passengers
- Approximately 200 million Japanese international travellers
- Approximately 190 million non-Japanese international travellers
The figures are based on data from the Osaka Regional Immigration Bureau.
Strong Performance in Fiscal Year 2025
KIX recorded approximately 33.55 million passengers during fiscal year 2025.
The airport remains one of Japan’s key international gateways, connecting travellers to destinations across Asia, Europe, North America and other global markets.
Airport officials said the milestone reflects the airport’s continued role in supporting tourism, business travel and regional connectivity.
Growth Milestones Over Three Decades
KIX has steadily increased passenger traffic throughout its history.
Previous passenger milestones include:
- 100 million passengers in January 2000
- 200 million passengers in November 2005
- 300 million passengers in June 2012
- 400 million passengers in March 2017
- 500 million passengers in December 2022
- 600 million passengers in May 2026
The latest achievement comes less than four years after the airport surpassed the 500 million passenger mark.
Airport Focuses on Safety and Passenger Experience
Kansai Airports said the milestone serves as an important moment for the airport as it continues to invest in safety, security and passenger comfort.
The airport operator stated that it will continue working with industry stakeholders to strengthen airport operations and improve the travel experience for passengers.
KIX Remains a Key Gateway to Japan
Over the past three decades, KIX has developed into one of Japan’s most important aviation hubs, serving both domestic and international markets.
The airport’s strategic location in the Kansai region allows it to support tourism, trade and economic activity while providing access to major destinations including Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe.
