IndiGo Sarla Aviation investment targets air taxi network
Air taxi plans focus on short-distance travel in India
IndiGo has made a strategic investment in Sarla Aviation, marking a step towards developing an air taxi network in India.
The ₹10 crore investment, made through IndiGo Ventures, supports Sarla Aviation’s work on electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for short-distance travel. The focus is on routes between 30 km and 300 km, where existing transport options are often limited or time-consuming.
The partnership brings together Sarla Aviation’s aircraft development capabilities with IndiGo’s operational experience and network. IndiGo currently operates a large domestic and international route system, which could support the future deployment of air taxi services.
The concept aims to address gaps in urban and regional mobility, including airport transfers, intercity travel, and emergency transport. Electric vertical flight technology enables aircraft to operate without traditional runways, with lower noise and emissions than helicopters.
The investment forms part of a wider funding round led by Accel and Nikhil Kamath. It also reflects growing interest in advanced air mobility, with similar partnerships emerging globally between airlines and aircraft developers.
While timelines for commercial operations have not been confirmed, the collaboration signals an effort to develop new transport options for short-distance travel across India.
