Holiday Inn Express Explores Morning Habits
Holiday Inn Express Survey Highlights Morning Routines Across the UK and Ireland
Holiday Inn Express by IHG has partnered with comedian Rob Beckett to examine the morning routines and sleep habits of people across the UK and Ireland as the summer travel season continues.
The study explores how bedtime routines, wake-up habits and breakfast preferences shape people’s mornings, highlighting the everyday rituals that many are reluctant to change.
Sleep Habits Influence the Day
According to the research, 69% of respondents said their night-time routine affects how they feel the following morning. More than half (52%) said they struggle to sleep unless they are on their preferred side of the bed.
Other common bedtime preferences include a quiet environment (50%), a cool room (47%) and blackout curtains (28%). Pillow choices also vary, with 45% sleeping with one pillow, while 43% prefer three pillows.
Morning Routines Differ
The survey found that 82% of people follow a regular morning routine, although their habits differ considerably.
Around 37% use the snooze button after the first alarm, while 33% get out of bed immediately. More than half (52%) check their phone within five minutes of waking, while only 3% avoid checking it altogether.
The findings also showed that 48% brush their teeth after breakfast, compared with 44% before breakfast. Meanwhile, 42% prefer a morning shower, while 29% shower the night before.
Breakfast Preferences
Coffee was the preferred morning drink for 36% of respondents, compared with 30% who chose tea.
The survey also highlighted differing views on breakfast combinations, including baked beans, cereal and tea preparation, with many respondents admitting they occasionally ignore their own preferences.
When travelling, 30% said they head straight for the hotel breakfast, while 32% described breakfast as their favourite part of a hotel stay.
The Great Wake Up Debate
To mark the findings, Holiday Inn Express and Rob Beckett have launched The Great Wake Up Debate, discussing some of the UK’s and Ireland’s most common morning habits over a complimentary hotel breakfast.
Rob Beckett said people have strong opinions about morning routines, from wake-up times to breakfast choices, while noting that a good night’s sleep and breakfast remain part of his own routine.

John Wright, Vice President, Mainstream Brands at IHG Hotels & Resorts, said the research highlights that guests have different morning habits, which is why Holiday Inn Express focuses on practical features such as comfortable beds, pillow choices, blackout curtains and complimentary hot breakfast to help guests start their day.
