Emirates signs tourism partnership with Wesgro for Western Cape
Western Cape partnership focuses on inbound tourism and connectivity
Emirates and Wesgro have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support inbound tourism to Cape Town and the Western Cape. The agreement was formalised during World Travel Market (WTM) Africa and reflects a shared focus on increasing visitor numbers and strengthening international market access.
The MoU was signed by Afzal Parambil, Regional Manager for Southern Africa at Emirates, and Wrenelle Stander, Chief Executive Officer of Wesgro. Under the agreement, both organizations will work together to promote travel from key markets including the GCC, the Far East, India and other identified regions.
The partnership aims to position Cape Town and the Western Cape as accessible destinations for both leisure and business travellers, supported by Emirates’ global network and Wesgro’s destination marketing initiatives.
Afzal Parambil noted that Cape Town continues to see steady demand across Emirates’ African network. He added that the collaboration with Wesgro will focus on expanding travel opportunities and supporting tourism flows through targeted promotion. The agreement also aligns with Emirates’ plans to introduce a third daily flight to Cape Town, to be operated by the Airbus A350.
Wrenelle Stander said the partnership supports Wesgro’s efforts to strengthen trade relationships and stimulate demand across priority markets. She added that collaboration with airline partners plays a role in connecting the region with international travellers and supporting tourism activity.
Tourism remains an important part of the Western Cape’s economy, contributing to employment and regional development. The agreement also supports the province’s Growth for Jobs Strategy, which aims to encourage sustainable tourism growth.
In 2025, Cape Town International Airport recorded 11.1 million two-way passengers, including both domestic and international traffic. Emirates has reported steady travel demand into Cape Town from markets including the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

Emirates began operations to Cape Town in 2008, following its earlier launch in Johannesburg in 1995. The airline continues to expand connectivity between South Africa and its global network through Dubai.
In addition to passenger services, Emirates SkyCargo supports trade links by transporting goods such as fresh produce, seafood, dairy and flowers. These operations help connect South African exporters with international markets through time-sensitive logistics.
