Chef Gabriela Filca Wins Croatia’s First Michelin Young Chef Award at Nebo Restaurant & Lounge

In the Croatian port city of Rijeka, Chef Gabriela Filca is shaping a new chapter for fine dining. In January 2024, at just 23 years old, she became Head Chef of the Michelin-starred Nebo Restaurant & Lounge at Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa. Her appointment placed her among the youngest women chefs to lead a Michelin-starred kitchen, a notable step in a field long led by men.

Under her leadership, Nebo retained its Michelin star in 2024. That same year, Chef Filca received Gault&Millau’s “Great Chef of Tomorrow” award, which also allowed her to train at France’s Roquefort Société. In July 2025, when the Michelin Guide released its new edition for Croatia, Nebo’s star was reaffirmed, and Chef Filca received the country’s first Michelin Young Chef Award.

Nebo’s Approach to Cuisine

Nebo Restaurant & Lounge opened in 2021, located atop the Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa. From its beginning under Chef Deni Srdoč, the restaurant focused on presenting Croatia’s coastal and inland ingredients through contemporary tasting menus. It received its first Michelin star in its opening year.

When Chef Filca took the lead in 2024, she built on that foundation with menus inspired by local landscapes and traditions. She works closely with fishermen, truffle hunters, and foragers, introducing collaborations and seasonal stories told through dishes such as Mrav (hazelnut leaf with mushroom and quince) and Buča (pumpkin prepared in multiple forms).

The Wine Program

The restaurant’s wine list, curated by sommelier Tomislav Mikinac, emphasizes Croatian terroir with varieties such as Malvazija and Pošip. In 2023, the program was recognized with the Best Wine List award by Jutarnji List. The cellar combines established producers with small wineries, highlighting both organic practices and regional identity.

Looking Ahead

With Chef Filca and Sommelier Mikinac working together, Nebo continues to develop a dining experience rooted in Croatia’s culinary and viticultural traditions, while also opening up space for new interpretations.
