Boeing Forecasts 50,000-Aircraft Global Fleet by 2045

Global Fleet Growth to Drive Demand for 44,000 Boeing Deliveries

Boeing has projected that global demand for air travel will continue to grow over the next two decades, with the worldwide commercial aircraft fleet expected to expand to more than 50,000 aircraft by 2045.

Released ahead of the Farnborough International Airshow, Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) estimates that airlines and cargo operators will require 43,625 new aircraft between 2026 and 2045 to meet rising passenger and cargo demand.

According to the forecast, around half of the new deliveries will replace older aircraft with more fuel-efficient models, while the remaining deliveries will support fleet expansion.

Passenger Traffic Expected to Double

Boeing expects global passenger traffic to grow by around 4% annually, resulting in a doubling of air travel demand over the next 20 years.

The company noted that recent geopolitical developments have led some travellers to adjust destinations and flight routes rather than cancel travel altogether. Short-haul and point-to-point leisure travel continue to support passenger demand, while some long-haul markets have experienced temporary changes.

Airlines Continue to Expand Networks

Airlines have introduced nearly 5,500 new airport pairs since 2015, expanding route networks by almost 30% and increasing travel options for passengers.

The report also highlights continued investment in both premium travel products and low-cost services, reflecting changing passenger preferences across different regions.

Without the operational efficiency of newer aircraft, airlines would require an estimated 9,000 additional aircraft to transport the same number of passengers.

Emerging Markets to Drive Aircraft Demand

Boeing forecasts that 55% of all aircraft deliveries over the next two decades will come from emerging and transitioning markets, including China, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. Mature markets such as North America, Northeast Asia, Oceania and Eurasia are expected to account for the remaining 45%.

Low-cost carrier fleets are projected to grow at nearly 4% annually, while network carriers are expected to expand by around 3% each year.

Air Cargo Market Continues to Expand

Air cargo is also expected to remain an important part of the aviation industry. Boeing forecasts 3.7% annual growth in air cargo traffic through 2045, supported by demand for high-value, perishable and time-sensitive goods, along with continued growth in cross-border e-commerce.

The report expects demand for more than 2,900 production and converted freighters over the next 20 years.
