Auckland Airport Plans Major Upgrade to Departure Hall and Check-in

Auckland Airport has announced plans for a major upgrade of its departure hall, the most significant change since the 1970s. The redevelopment will introduce a digitally enabled check-in area that brings domestic jet and international travellers together under one roof.

Over the next four years, the current check-in space will be transformed into a 13,000 m² area designed to enhance the flow and provide a more practical start to the journey. The upgrade will focus on reducing traditional queuing by utilising self-service kiosks and automated bag drops, supported by staff.

Chief Executive Carrie Hurihanganui said the project represents a milestone in the airport’s development.

“This is an opportunity to reimagine the check-in process and prepare New Zealand’s main airport for the future,” she said.

“We’re expanding the check-in space, introducing digital systems, and creating flexibility that supports both travellers and airlines.”

The project includes:

• Common-use self-service kiosks and automated bag drops are to replace around 60 traditional desks.

• Expanded terminal space, adding 2,800m² to support traveller facilities and connect with the new domestic jet terminal.

• A staged interior refresh, including upgraded technology and more efficient layouts.

The technology, already trialled in one zone, has replaced 30 desks with 36 kiosks and 22 bag drops. Early feedback has informed the design for the wider rollout. A key feature is flexibility, as kiosks and bag drops can be shared across different airlines to improve efficiency and reduce duplication.

Currently, 27 airlines operate international flights from Auckland to 42 overseas destinations. Once the new domestic terminal opens, domestic jet services will also use the centralised check-in hall.

During construction, a temporary check-in pavilion will be built near the Transport Hub to maintain capacity. Main terminal works are scheduled to begin in early 2026.

Auckland Airport states that the redevelopment will provide more efficient processes, flexible infrastructure, and a smoother travel experience for passengers.
