American Airlines Updates Mobile App to Help Customers Manage Travel Disruptions

American Airlines has introduced new enhancements to its mobile app designed to help customers manage travel disruptions more easily and independently. The updates provide real-time solutions in one place, allowing travellers to review options and take action quickly when plans change.

Available through the American mobile app and aa.com, the new features bring together essential information and tools related to disruption, giving customers the ability to choose the option that best suits their journey.

“We strive to make every customer’s travel as smooth as possible, but we recognize things don’t always go to plan. When that happens, customers deserve transparent information and real-time tools to get their travel back on track,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer.

“Our new app enhancements don’t just explain why travel was disrupted, they help customers take action. We’re giving travellers real-time options and more control when they need it most.”

Real-time options in one place

When a disruption occurs, customers can access a dedicated experience linked to their reservation, bringing together key information and available actions in one centralized view. Flight status updates are easier to follow, with clear visual indicators showing what is happening and what steps can be taken next.

Depending on the situation, customers may be able to:

  • Rebook flights through a guided self-service flow

  • Track checked baggage in real time

  • Access hotel, meal and transportation vouchers through the app or aa.com

  • View ground transportation options through Lyft and Uber integrations

The goal is to reduce the need for customers to search across multiple channels or wait in line by presenting available choices clearly and enabling faster decision-making.

More features planned later this year

American Airlines said it will expand these disruption-support tools further later this year, with additional capabilities including:

  • Self-service standby options

  • More flexible rebooking choices

  • Expanded hotel, meal and transportation support

Part of a broader digital focus

The app updates are part of the airline’s wider effort to build a more connected travel experience through technology. American Airlines continues to invest in digital tools to support customers from booking through boarding, and during service recovery when needed.

The airline also highlighted its focus on customer experience across the journey, including network connectivity, onboard amenities and its AAdvantage loyalty program.
