Descent optimization supports fleet efficiency at Delta Air Lines

Airbus has deployed its Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) solution across the Delta Air Lines Airbus fleet, covering 270 aircraft, including A319, A320, A321, and A330-family aircraft.

The rollout marks a large-scale retrofit of the system across a mixed Airbus fleet and forms part of ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and fuel use.

DPO is designed to refine aircraft descent by enabling more efficient vertical flight profiles, thereby reducing fuel consumption during the approach phase.

The deployment has been carried out over a 24-month period and includes aircraft that were not originally configured for the system. Airbus and Delta worked together to extend the application of DPO, using operational data to adapt the solution across different aircraft types.

Dominik Wacht, Vice President of Customer Services North America at Airbus, said the collaboration focused on aligning the solution with Delta’s operational requirements and fuel efficiency targets.

The deployment reflects a broader trend within the aviation sector, where airlines are adopting solutions that improve fuel efficiency, extend the value of existing aircraft and align performance across fleets.

Airbus continues to provide a range of services to airlines, including maintenance support, operational tools, training and digital solutions aimed at improving aircraft performance and reducing environmental impact.

The company also maintains a significant presence in the United States, supporting jobs and working with suppliers across multiple states as part of its wider aerospace activities.
