Delta Enhances 737NG Fleet Efficiency with Finlets

Delta Expands Finlet Programme Across Boeing 737NG Fleet

Delta Air Lines has announced plans to install Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) Finlets across its Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleet, covering approximately 240 aircraft once the programme is completed.

The decision follows a detailed evaluation conducted jointly by Delta and VCT, including flight testing, operational performance analysis and engineering assessments focused on aerodynamic efficiency.

The initiative forms part of Delta’s ongoing efforts to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and enhance operational performance through fleet upgrades.

How Finlets Improve Aircraft Efficiency

Finlets are aerodynamic devices fitted to the aft fuselage of an aircraft. They are designed to improve airflow, reduce drag and lower fuel consumption during flight.

According to VCT, the technology works by reducing airflow separation and improving pressure distribution around the aircraft’s aft fuselage. This helps reduce aerodynamic drag, thereby improving fuel efficiency and lowering carbon emissions.

The technology has been evaluated through flight testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis on Delta’s Boeing 737NG fleet before being selected for wider implementation.

Supporting Fleet and Sustainability Goals

The Finlet programme aligns with the airline’s strategy of adopting operational improvements that support both efficiency and sustainability objectives.

As fuel consumption remains the primary source of airline carbon emissions, technologies that improve aircraft performance can reduce environmental impact while supporting operational reliability.

Delta stated that the programme is part of its broader fleet-efficiency initiatives, with the airline continuing to evaluate practical technologies that can deliver measurable operational benefits.

The installation programme will be rolled out across the airline’s Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft in the coming years, further strengthening the carrier’s efforts to optimise performance across its fleet.
