AirAsia Malaysia Launches Kaohsiung–Osaka Route Under Fifth-Freedom Expansion Plan

AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) has announced the launch of a new Kaohsiung–Osaka route as part of its fifth-freedom expansion strategy, marking the next phase of its network development across North Asia. The route will be operated as an extension of the airline’s existing Kuala Lumpur–Kaohsiung service.

The move builds on AirAsia Malaysia’s first fifth-freedom operation introduced last year, which connects Kota Kinabalu–Taipei–Fukuoka. With the addition of Kaohsiung–Osaka, the airline continues to expand beyond traditional point-to-point services, creating additional connectivity between regional markets while leveraging Kuala Lumpur as a central hub.

From June 15, 2026, AirAsia will operate daily flights between Kaohsiung and Osaka, alongside its existing Kuala Lumpur–Kaohsiung service. The new fifth-freedom sector is intended to support travel demand between Taiwan and Japan while offering passengers additional routing options across AirAsia’s wider network.

Commenting on the launch, Fareh Mazputra, General Manager of AirAsia Malaysia, said the performance of the airline’s initial fifth-freedom route demonstrated the viability of this strategy. He noted that the Kaohsiung–Osaka service reflects AirAsia’s approach of strengthening existing routes while opening access to new markets.

To mark the introduction of the route, AirAsia has announced promotional fares starting from TWD 2,690 one-way from Kaohsiung to Osaka and JPY 11,990 one-way from Osaka to Kaohsiung. Bookings are open until February 15, 2026, for travel between June 15 and October 24, 2026, via the AirAsia MOVE app and airasia.com. Terms and conditions apply.

Osaka is a major commercial and tourism centre in Japan, known for its culinary culture, historic landmarks, and urban environment. The new Kaohsiung–Osaka service is expected to support two-way travel between Taiwan and Japan for both leisure and business passengers, while strengthening regional connectivity within AirAsia’s North Asia network.
