The Toong-Naga Road in North Sikkim will reopen on December 1, 2024, following a 14-month suspension, boosting tourism in the region.

After being blocked for more than a year owing to major landslides, the Toong-Naga Road—a vital road connecting the well-known tourist destinations of Lachung and Lachen in North Sikkim—is set to reopen on December 1, 2024. The significant inconveniences created by this road closure impacted the local population and the tourism sector, which significantly rely on this crucial link. Since the road is a considerable tourist entry point, there is a renewed sense of hope with its reopening, especially for the region’s tourism industry. Along with the road’s reopening, the North District Administration will start distributing North Sikkim tourist passes on December 1st, making the procedure more accessible for visitors keen to see the region.

An alternate road through Dzongu had been utilized to reroute traffic during the shutdown. However, because of a landslide that left tourists stuck in June, tourist permits were suspended, and the route was also temporarily closed.
