Asia's Largest International Airport to handle 6 Million Passengers in its First Year - Aviation A2Z

Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu has announced that the Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, will be inaugurated on October 30. Flight operations are expected to begin within 45 days of the inauguration, initially connecting 10 cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Discussions are ongoing with IndiGo and Air India Express to start flight services.

The airport will be connected by six roads, a rapid rail-cum-metro line, and pod taxis. It will operate under the code ‘DXN’. Runway trials were carried out on December 9 with the landing of a commercial aircraft. In July, airport authorities issued an advisory to builders and local agencies to adhere to height limits within a 20 km radius of the airport.

Mr. Naidu also shared plans to expand Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, stating that a request for nine acres of land has been submitted to the Uttar Pradesh government to enlarge the terminal building and parking area.

The Minister further announced that free Wi-Fi will be provided at all airports in India within the next two months, and libraries will be introduced for passenger convenience.

The Noida International Airport, located around 60 km from Noida, is expected to serve passengers from western Uttar Pradesh, Noida, and Greater Noida. Developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport, the facility aims to handle approximately 12 million passengers annually in its first phase.

Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of YIAPL, said the airport will incorporate local architectural features and food options from western Uttar Pradesh to reflect the region’s culture while maintaining operational efficiency.

The concession agreement for the Jewar airport was signed in October 2020, and the construction contract was awarded to Tata Projects in June 2022. Once operational, it will add another option for air travellers from the National Capital Region, alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airport.
