Mizoram Strengthens Tourism Economy with Rail Connectivity, ₹395 Cr Projects and Sports Tourism Focus
Mizoram is reinforcing its tourism-led growth strategy through improved connectivity, continued infrastructure investment and destination-focused events. With tourism emerging as an important economic driver, the state is drawing on its natural landscapes, cultural heritage and community participation to build a steady visitor economy.
The inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in September 2025 has improved access to the state, supporting higher tourist movement. Mizoram recorded 145.54% growth in tourist arrivals between 2023 and 2024, indicating strong momentum. Early trends in the current year suggest continued growth, even before final figures are compiled. With rail connectivity now operational, the state expects further gains in visitor numbers and travel convenience.
“This is not just about increasing tourist numbers – it is about strengthening Mizoram’s economic future through tourism,” said Shri Lalnghinglova Hmar, Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Tourism, Mizoram.
“Our vision is to develop Mizoram as an experiential destination where nature, culture and community come together. Tourism can support rural livelihoods, youth employment and wider visibility. Connectivity has improved access, and we are building on that progress with a focused approach,” the Minister added.
Tourism Calendar 2026 Aims to Encourage Longer Stays

To support longer and more immersive visits, Mizoram Tourism has launched the Mizoram Tourism Events & Festival Calendar 2026, unveiled on December 15, 2025. The calendar brings together festivals, cultural programmes and sporting events across the year, helping travellers plan ahead and explore beyond short trips.
Key events include Chapchar Kut, the Anthurium Festival, the Mizoram Travel Fest, and winter celebrations. The initiative is intended to promote year-round tourism activity and encourage spending across local communities.
“Events help drive travel decisions and visitor movement,” said Smt. R. Lalrodingi, Director, Tourism Department, Mizoram.
“The Tourism Calendar 2026 is designed as a planning and promotion tool. Based on travel trends, we have curated experiences that encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more and spend locally. Our aim is to support a year-round tourism economy,” she said.
₹395 Crore Infrastructure Pipeline to Support Tourism Growth

To strengthen tourism capacity, Mizoram is implementing projects worth ₹395.04 crore under central and externally aided schemes. The pipeline includes the development of eco-resorts, ropeways, heritage centres, pilgrimage circuits, convention facilities, and farm tourism roads, supported through programmes such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, NESIDS, and SASCI.
Alongside infrastructure development, the state’s Bana Kaih (Handholding) Scheme is supporting tourism entrepreneurship in areas such as homestays, transport services, catering, travel operations and souvenir businesses. Under a dedicated package, 100 rural homestays are planned over the next two years, with a focus on community participation.
“Infrastructure has greater impact when it supports livelihoods,” the Director added.
“Each project is being planned to generate local employment and help tourism revenue circulate within communities.”
Aizawl International Half Marathon 2026 to Strengthen Sports Tourism

Sports tourism is also becoming part of Mizoram’s destination strategy through the Aizawl International Half Marathon (AIHM) 2026, scheduled for February 14, 2026, at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium. After its first edition in 2025, which drew around 1,500 runners, the 2026 event is expected to attract approximately 5,000 national and international participants, supporting Aizawl’s profile as a sports tourism destination.
“AIHM is being developed as a destination event, not only a race,” said Captain Rahul Bali, MD, Innovations India and Curator, AIHM.
“Our team is working on national outreach, route planning, athlete engagement and digital campaigns to build participation and awareness. Each runner becomes a storyteller for Mizoram,” he said.
With a prize pool of over ₹15 lakh, AFI accreditation, and improved connectivity supporting travel, AIHM is expected to boost demand for local hotels, transport services, eateries, and small businesses.
Through coordinated work across infrastructure, entrepreneurship, events and sports tourism, Mizoram is building a tourism economy that supports local participation and long-term visitor engagement.
