Japan Boosts Military Capacity

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) has ordered 17 CH-47 Block II Chinooks with Extended Range capabilities to update its fleet, replacing specific CH-47 JA models. Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) will jointly produce the aircraft. Since the 1980s, Boeing and KHI have supplied the JSDF with over 100 Chinooks, establishing it as one of Japan’s most enduring and successful licensed manufacturing initiatives.

“This award strengthens our decades-long relationship with KHI and provides critical capability improvements that will keep the Japan Self-Defense Forces operating heavy-lift aircraft for decades to come,” said Heather McBryan, vice president and program manager, Boeing Cargo Programs.

“The Block II configuration and digital flight controls will modernize and significantly improve Japan’s helicopter transport capabilities by improving aircraft stability, safety, and efficiency.”

The Block II Chinook extended-range helicopter represents the latest heavy-lift and multi-role aircraft generation. It boasts an advanced digital cockpit, a reinforced airframe, improved fuel tanks, and various enhancements contributing to better performance and compatibility with the growing global fleet of updated Chinooks. By incorporating modern aircraft design and avionics, it supports future technology upgrades and further potential for expanding operational capabilities.

By becoming the fourth global customer of this advanced configuration, Japan enhances the Joint Staff of the Defense Forces’ position at the leading edge of heavy-lift aviation alongside the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany.
