Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2 Prepares for Passenger Operations
Hong Kong Airport Conducts Large-Scale Terminal 2 Trial
Hong Kong International Airport has conducted a full-scale operational trial at Terminal 2 (T2) ahead of the launch of its new departure facilities scheduled for 27 May 2026.
The exercise involved more than 1,100 participants from approximately 30 organizations, including Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), airlines, ground handling teams, government agencies, Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) and other operational stakeholders.
The trial was designed to test the full passenger departure process at the new terminal. Participants simulated various stages of the travel journey, including arrival through Airport Express trains, buses, private vehicles and cross-border transport services.
The exercise also covered check-in procedures through airline counters and self-service bag drop facilities, movement through e-Security Gates, security checks, immigration procedures and access to e-Boarding Gates through the Automated People Mover system.
Staff involved in the exercise also acted as passengers and shared feedback on their experience and observations to help assess operations before the opening.

Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations at Airport Authority Hong Kong, said the trial was intended to familiarise operational partners with the terminal layout, passenger processes and facilities ahead of commissioning.
Once operational, the new departure facilities at Terminal 2 are expected to handle around eight million passenger journeys during the first year of service.
Beginning 27 May 2026, 15 airlines, mainly serving regional routes, are scheduled to relocate their departure check-in operations to Terminal 2 in phases. These include home-based carriers HK Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines. The transition process is expected to conclude by mid-June 2026 ahead of the summer travel period.
