Delta, Shell and Port of Portland Deliver First SAF Uplift at PDX

Delta Air Lines, in partnership with Shell and Portland International Airport (PDX), has successfully introduced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into the fuel system at PDX. This marks the first commercial-scale use of SAF at the airport. This achievement not only expands Delta’s SAF operations but also helps PDX, managed by the Port of Portland, to prepare for future growth in SAF usage across the United States.

The delivery included more than 400,000 gallons of blended SAF produced by Montana Renewables from waste-derived feedstock. Shell supplied the fuel to Zenith Terminal in Portland, where it was mixed with conventional jet fuel to meet regulatory requirements, before being transported to PDX by barge, truck, and pipeline.

Charlotte Lollar, Delta’s SAF Director

“Each SAF delivery demonstrates how collaboration can make SAF more accessible,” said Charlotte Lollar, Delta’s SAF director.

“By working with Shell and the Port of Portland, we can use existing infrastructure to introduce SAF at more airports and support its wider adoption.”

Port of Portland Chief Aviation Officer Dan Pippenger added, “This step toward bringing SAF to PDX can contribute to improved local air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. We will continue to work with partners to align policies that support the infrastructure and market development needed to expand SAF use.”

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a renewable substitute for conventional jet fuel that can decrease lifecycle carbon emissions by as much as 80%. It is compatible with current aircraft engines and fuel systems. However, its availability is still limited, and it is more expensive due to being in the early stages of production.

Delta is partnering with the Port of Portland and various stakeholders to establish a sustainable Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) delivery system in Oregon. Additionally, they are advocating for state and federal policies aimed at boosting production and enhancing affordability. Federal incentives, such as the SAF Blenders Tax Credit (40B) and the Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z), have been instrumental in supporting SAF development and are expected to remain in effect until 2029.

This delivery enhances Delta’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives at various airports, including Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and Detroit (DTW). It demonstrates the airline’s commitment to expanding SAF access across a range of airport systems. Delta has a strong presence in Oregon, providing connections from Portland International Airport (PDX) to its hubs and over 300 destinations, backed by nearly 4,500 employees in the Pacific Northwest.
