American Airlines Prepares for Summer Travel Demand Across Its Network
American Airlines is preparing for its 2026 summer travel season with an expanded flight schedule, operational upgrades, and customer-focused improvements across its network.
The airline expects to serve around 75 million passengers between 21 May and 8 September across approximately 750,000 flights, marking its largest summer schedule to date. Memorial Day weekend is expected to see more than 4.2 million travellers across over 40,000 flights.

To support summer operations, American Airlines has conducted preventive aircraft maintenance, upgraded facilities for warmer weather, and increased staffing at key locations. The airline has also introduced operational adjustments to improve reliability and reduce delays.
At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the airline introduced a redesigned 13-bank schedule to reduce delays, minimise missed connections, and improve baggage handling. Similar scheduling changes have also been introduced at Philadelphia International Airport to improve transatlantic operations and ease congestion.
American Airlines stated that additional scheduled block time has been added across flights to improve operational consistency and help flights arrive on schedule.
The airline is also focusing on operations at O’Hare International Airport, where it expects to handle over 5.2 million passengers this summer following operational changes introduced by the Federal Aviation Administration.
On the customer experience side, the airline has expanded digital tools within its mobile app, including self-service rebooking, baggage tracking, and digital travel vouchers during disruptions. Additional updates include Samsung Wallet boarding pass integration, wider use of Connect Assist technology to connect passengers, and free AT&T-sponsored Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members on most flights.
American Airlines has also expanded TSA PreCheck Touchless ID access across 60 airports and introduced One Stop Security on flights between DFW and Heathrow Airport, allowing eligible passengers to continue to connecting flights without additional security checks or baggage re-screening.
As part of its summer network expansion, the airline is adding new routes from Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague, alongside additional long-haul services from Dallas Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich, and from Miami to Milan.
