According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), 1.32 crore passengers were transported by domestic airlines in India in June. The domestic airline passenger count from January to June 2024 was 793.48 lakh, up from 760.93 lakh in the same period the year before, according to a statement from the DGCA. This represents an annual growth of 4.28% and a monthly growth of 5.76%.

IndiGo carried 80.30 lakh passengers, nearly 5 lakhs fewer than the previous month

The largest airline in India, IndiGo, maintained its fleet size and market share leadership, holding the top spot at 60.8% in June despite a decline from 61.6% in May. The airline carried 80.30 lakh passengers, nearly 5 lakhs fewer than the previous month. IndiGo’s market shares decreased by 0.7% from May to June.

Air India carried 19.22 lakh passengers in June

With a 14.6% market share, full-service carrier Air India, controlled by Tata Sons, was in second place. Air India carried 19.22 lakh passengers in June, increasing its market share by about 1% over the previous month.

Vistara ranked third in June with 12.76 lakh passengers and a 9.7% market share. As of May, Tata Sons’ low-cost carrier, Air India Express, has a 4.8% market share, a 0.3% decline.

With the best on-time performance of 79.5 percent, Akasa Air beat its competitors

Together, the three airlines of the Tata Group have a 28.5 percent market share. While Akasa Air, which debuted two years ago, flew 5.9 lakh passengers with a 4.4 percent market share, SpiceJet carried 7.02 lakh passengers during the month.

Additionally, the data reveals that in June 2024, Akasa Air outperformed its rivals with the highest on-time performance (OTP) of 79.5 percent at the airports in Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Bengaluru, while SpiceJet had the lowest OTP of any major airline, at 46.1%.
