AirAsia Plans New Airline Expansion Amid Fuel Cost Pressures

AirAsia Moves Ahead with New Airline and Fleet Growth Strategy
AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes has said the airline group is preparing to launch a new carrier, with an official announcement expected within the next one to two months.
Speaking during an interview in Montreal, Fernandes said aircraft from the group’s existing fleet would support the new venture, although further operational details have not yet been disclosed.
The planned expansion follows AirAsia’s recent order for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft, part of the company’s broader strategy to expand connectivity across Asia using smaller narrow-body aircraft. The airline group aims to strengthen regional operations and improve access to secondary and emerging destinations.
Fernandes said the aviation industry continues to face pressure from rising fuel prices and geopolitical uncertainty, particularly linked to tensions in the Middle East. However, he noted that the company sees long-term opportunities despite current market conditions.
AirAsia has continued its approach of avoiding fuel hedging, with Fernandes maintaining that oil prices are likely to ease over time. He said the company remains focused on managing costs through operational planning rather than relying heavily on fuel hedging strategies.
To support future expansion, the airline is preparing to raise up to US$600 million through bond sales and is also in discussions with Malaysian banks regarding refinancing arrangements to reduce borrowing costs. Fernandes added that discussions with Canadian pension funds are also expected as the group explores additional investment opportunities.

The airline group has indicated that it may not meet its earlier profit projections for the year due to ongoing industry challenges, although revenue is expected to remain broadly in line with previous guidance.
AirAsia currently operates across markets including Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, with a fleet of around 250 aircraft. The latest Airbus order is expected to significantly expand its future aircraft pipeline.
The company has also announced plans to launch services from Bahrain as part of efforts to establish a local airline unit in the Gulf region. Reports have additionally suggested that AirAsia has explored potential expansion opportunities in Vietnam.
