Air India Reduces Fuel Surcharge on Europe and North America Routes
Air India Revises Fuel Surcharge Following Lower Oil Prices
Air India has reduced the temporary fuel surcharge on selected international routes following a decline in global crude oil prices and easing fuel costs.
The revised surcharge came into effect on 1 July 2026, partially reversing the additional charges introduced in April during the conflict in West Asia, which had led to higher fuel prices and increased airline operating costs.
Under the revised pricing, the fuel surcharge on flights to North America and Australia has been reduced from USD 280 to USD 200 per ticket. For flights to Europe and the United Kingdom, the surcharge has been lowered from USD 205 to USD 125. Fuel surcharges on domestic flights and other international routes remain unchanged.
Air India introduced a temporary surcharge on 7 April 2026, effective from 10 April, after rising crude oil prices and airspace restrictions linked to the conflict in West Asia increased operating expenses.
At the time, the Air India Group, which includes Air India and Air India Express, introduced fuel surcharges ranging from USD 24 to USD 280 on international services and ₹299 to ₹899 on domestic flights, depending on route and distance.
The latest revision follows a decline in global oil prices, reducing pressure on airline operating costs. According to earlier industry data cited by the airline, average global jet fuel prices had almost doubled during the peak of the conflict, making fuel one of the largest operating expenses for airlines.
Aviation turbine fuel typically accounts for 40% to 45% of an airline’s operating costs, making fuel price changes a significant factor in airline pricing decisions.
The revised surcharge is expected to provide some relief to passengers travelling on affected long-haul international routes while reflecting the recent easing in fuel prices.
