Air India Expands Mumbai–London Route with New B787-9 Aircraft

Air India has started operating its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft on flights between Mumbai and London Heathrow, introducing updated cabin interiors and a new Premium Economy cabin on one of its key international routes.

From today, flights AI131 and AI130 between Mumbai and London Heathrow will be operated using the airline’s newly delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft. These are the first Boeing 787s built specifically for Air India, featuring newly designed interiors installed during production.

The introduction of the aircraft also brings Premium Economy to the route, giving passengers the option to choose between Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Air India’s second daily service between Mumbai and London Heathrow will continue to operate with the upgraded Boeing 777-300ER, which includes First Class.

Updated Onboard Experience

The Boeing 787-9 is configured with 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy seats, offering redesigned cabins with updated technology and interiors inspired by Indian design.

Passengers can expect:

  • Business Class suites with direct aisle access, fully flat beds, wireless charging, personal storage and 17-inch 4K entertainment screens.
  • Premium Economy seats are arranged in a 2-3-2 layout, with additional legroom, adjustable headrests and leg rests, and 13.3-inch entertainment screens.
  • Economy Class seats designed for long-haul travel with 11.6-inch entertainment screens and integrated device holders.
  • The Thales AVANT Up inflight entertainment system with Bluetooth audio, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, AC power outlets and more than 3,000 hours of entertainment.
  • Cabin mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions.
  • Updated onboard dining, premium tableware, bedding and redesigned amenity kits.

Strengthening India–UK Connectivity

The UK remains an important international market for Air India, serving business travellers, leisure visitors and the Indian diaspora.

The airline currently operates 57 weekly non-stop flights between India and the UK, connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Amritsar with London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Birmingham.

These services also provide onward connections through Air India’s hubs to destinations across the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia.
